Billionaire George Soros wants to invest in Sri Lanka - www.sundaytimes.lk

Billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros on Thursday exuded confidence in Sri Lanka and said he wanted to invest in the once, war-torn country.

Taking part in a high-level economic forum in Colombo, he said his team was looking at investment in the country and also social projects. The decision by Soros, who has drawn both accolades and controversy over his 'investment' involvement in many countries, will boost Sri Lanka's hopes of driving more FDI. Economic analysts said many international investors are likely to follow Soros, whose investment decisions are closely followed by the international investment community.

Soros told the forum, inaugurated by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and including Prof. Joseph Stiglitz, an award-winner economist among other high-level participants, that he was impressed by the changes in the country after the new Maithripala Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government was installed.

He said the country should leapfrog to a knowledge-based economy from an agriculture base. (Bandula)
